You Never Know What a Voicemail May Bring

When I travel and we are working late into the night it can be hard to find a time to talk with my son. In addition, my son loves to pretend to talk on the phone, but hasn’t been so keen on talking on the real telephone. This time was different. He left me the voicemail below. You may need to listen to it more than once to understand everything he said, but it warms a father’s heart.

Music Appreciation Project Followup

I know that I haven’t posted anything about my music appreciation project in the last month, but it has been a big success.  I enjoyed listening to a number of different stations including the Avett Brothers and Eric Clapton.  I found a couple new artist that I really enjoy and have a great new station on Pandora; Joshua Radin.  I have been listening to the Joshua Radin station for the last couple of weeks and it has a great mix of music, with very few duds.

Below is a list of artist’s that I have found to be very interesting and enlightening.

Artist of the Week (Learn to Appreciate Music Project)

My musical tastes are fairly limited.  As a kid my mom mostly listened to oldies stations and my Dad listened to NPR.  When your favorite “songs” are Morning Edition and All Things Considered you might end up a little musically declined.  My wife’s family appreciates music for all of it’s artistic greatness.  They listened to a lot of different music growing up, can sing, play piano and one of them is even in a band.

I enjoy listening to a lot of different music (just not rap music for some reason), but it isn’t something that I really seek out.  In addition, for me it is really filler/background part of the environment.  I can listen to a song 20 times and still not know the lyrics, artist, etc.   So in an effort to expand my musical experiences I am moving forward with a project to listen to a new artist each week on Pandora until the first of the year.  This is a great way to experience some new music and possibly find some really great artists that I haven’t heard of.

Each week you can see the artist that I am listening too at the top left corner of my blog (screen shot of what to look for to the right).  What I need is some suggestions of artists to listen to for the next couple of weeks.  So far I have listened to the artists below:

  • Allison Krauss (this weeks selection)
  • Derek Webb
  • James Taylor
  • Josh Turner
  • Carrie Underwood
  • Yanni

Invest how??? It can’t be that easy?

Check out these two great investment resources.  They won’t tell you exactly what to pick, but they offer resources to develop an investment strategy that maximizes your return and not those of your financial planner, broker, or some other Financial services company.

  1. Here is an article from the San Fransisco Magazine talking about the history of this approach.
  2. Brochure/Booklet by Patrick Geddes that talks about investing strategies, how to implement those strategies, and when to hire an investment advisor (any when not to).  Find the booklet here

History and Guide to NFL Defenses

The NY Times isn’t normally the website that you think of having great football reporting, but they have an in-depth and educational series on the different defensive schemes in football over time.  Looks like it will come out in 7 parts and the first 3 are already published.  Probably more information that you want to know as a causal fan, but for those looking to understand a little more about the history and origin of the defensive schemes you watch today, the series is enlightening.

I will update this post as new articles in the series are published..
